Moving in Thornton: what to know

Thornton began in 1953, when developer Sam Hoffman built the first fully planned community in Adams County, and it became a city in 1956, named after Governor Dan Thornton. Those early homes are still the heart of Original Thornton, near 88th Avenue. Today Thornton is home to about 147,000 people, and many of its newest neighborhoods are farther north, around 136th Avenue and Highway 7.

That spread shapes moving day. Ranch homes in Original Thornton are mostly on one level, while Hunters Glen has plenty of tri-levels from the 1980s and ’90s, which means several short flights of stairs. Newer neighborhoods are often run by an HOA or a metro district, and many have rules about where moving trucks can park and when you can move in. Check yours before moving day and let us know what they say.

I-25 runs straight through Thornton, and E-470 and I-76 cross other parts of the city. The N Line commuter rail also links Thornton to Denver, with stops at Original Thornton/88th, Thornton Crossroads/104th and Eastlake/124th. Renting in a larger apartment or townhome community? Ask the leasing office where the moving truck should park.

Thornton moving FAQ

Do you move families from Denver to Thornton?

Yes. Thornton is north of Denver along I-25, well inside our service area, and we move people in both directions, as well as from one Thornton neighborhood to another.

We’re moving into a new-build neighborhood. What should we know?

Many newer Thornton neighborhoods have an HOA or metro district. Ask whether they limit truck parking or move-in times, and pass that along when you request your free quote. If you want to settle in quickly, we can unpack for you, too.

Our home is a tri-level. Is that a problem?

Not at all. Tri-levels and split-levels just mean more short trips up and down stairs. Tell us about the layout, plus any heavy items like a piano or an antique, when you call.

Do you serve the Weld County part of Thornton?

Yes. The Weld County side of Thornton is covered just like the Adams County side, and our service area stretches to communities about 60 miles from Denver.

We also move people in Westminster, Broomfield, Commerce City and Arvada, as well as neighboring Northglenn and Brighton. See all service areas.
